Manikbag Digambar Jain Boarding, Belgaum

This Boarding was started at Belgaum on 1st june 1911 under the leadership of a famous jewelry merchant shri. Dharmaraj Appaji Subhedar of Belgaum after establishment of Kolhapur, Hubli and sangli Boarding houses of the Sabha. He himself donated enough amount for establishment of this boarding house and therefore this boarding was named as “Subhedar Jain Boarding.” But unfortunately, this boarding was closed in 1914 due to some unavoidable circumstances. During the same year Dakshin Bharat Jain Sabha’s senior leader shri. Manikchand Hirachand Javeri passed away suddenly on 16th July (1914) and honorable members of the Sabha decided to start boarding house in his memory at Belgaum. Immediately after this decision was taken, the Acre 14 gunthas of land and school building on pune –Bangalore highway was purchased on lease from American Mission and started boarding house and named as a “Manikbag”.

In 1971 some additional land was bought by Mr. shaha and Mr. Mirji of Belgaum on which 24 rooms were built. In 1984, 35 new + 6 old rooms were available where 100 students could have been accommodated. After 1979-80 with sincere efforts of shri. A.A.Shetty, Shri. Jaypal Appanavar, Shri. Mohan Patil, Shri. Dharmaraj Jedi, Shri. B.B.Malgave, Shri. Chandrakant Kagwade and shri. Anant Kalmani two Acres of open land was purchased on 99 years lease from the Municipal corporation of Belgaum which is known as “Mal Maruti Extension” and where boarding house and graceful big cultural cum marriage hall, Mess, temple and other facilities have been made available. Local noble donors and Govt. of Karnataka have been assisted for construction and development of this “Mal Maruti Extension”.

Today this boarding house is having 50 rooms at both the sites (Manikbag & Mal Maruti Extension) and in all 120 students are residing in this boarding house. As like other boarding houses of the Dakshin Bharat Jain Sabha this boarding is also educational and cultural Centre of southern Indian Jain Community, where number of eminent personalities were the residents and they received their education in renowned educational institutions of Belgaum city.
